For more than twenty years, Ramuntcho Matta has attempted to catch the images of special instants lived in his father’s intimacy, the famous surrealist painter, Roberto Matta who died in 2002. The result is a thirty minutes’ film which is a unique account on this artist, his daily life, his behaviour towards others. But far more than a constrained, revered, respectful tribute, Ramuntcho Matta traces his own progression, a true autobiographical work which shows his deep wish to meet his father, to understand him, to be acknowledged by him. With this quest, the camera becomes a mediating tool which, in these exceptional circumstances, gathers all the questions about filial relation. The video leads Ramuntcho Matta to wondering, through drawing and photography, about transmission and the choice of his other fathers.
With Laurie Anderson, I have discovered how to build sounds. With Robert Wilson, I have discovered a number of notions about scenography and space. With Don Cherry, I have discovered and felt what jazz, improvisation mean. With Brian Gysin, I have discovered narration. With Felix Guattari, I have discovered what multiple means. With John Cage, I have discovered what aleatoric means. With Chris Marker, I have discovered how to synthesise. With music, I have discovered what complementarity means. With my father, I have discovered “looking at him”. With my cat, I have discovered purring.
Ramuntcho Matta was born in 1960, in Neuilly sur Seine. He lives and works in Paris. He is a composer, a visual artist, a consultant in emotional arborescence. He teaches how to doubt at the National Graduate School of Industrial Design in Paris. |
