These photographs were taken in places that can be rented in order to live out erotic fantasies : rooms available as backdrops for sexual desires and cravings and decorated in line with different themes.
These rooms are located in a border area between the public and the private spheres. So that they can be readly rented out for a hundred dollars an hour, their design must appeal to a large variety of individuals and satisfy collective fantasies. What ìs striking about them is the consistency anc care with which the various scenes are arranged, to say nothing of the wealth of detail ; in fact, the club owners invest a lot of time, money and affection in their interiors. Given that the rooms are legal in America, once they are not used for prostitution, they cannot be easily closed down. That meant I had no difficulty finding them in the first place and getting permission to photograph them. Only very few of the owners rejected my project. The photographs were taken in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The pictorial representation of the rooms has a seductive force which the rooms themselves do not. Physically walking across a room has certain advantages : one is master of one's own perspective. On the other hand, one is domehow at the mercy of the room. The power of the image takes effect in a different way : apparently boundless, the room's fastidious surface details - preserved on the smooth surface of the photograph - offer themselves for imaginative use, while at the same time evading any kind of monopolizing grasp, as if to say, "What do you want ? I'm only an interior..."
