exhibition in galerie anne barrault, 2005
With the playful intention of applying the promotional methods of consumer society to contemporary art, Heidi Wood has been placing her own paintings in “appealing” settings since 2001. The photographs of these ephemeral installations are intended to function both on a basic level, as slick advertising images that associate the paintings with a desirable lifestyle, and as works of art that question their own mercantile status.
Then, as the paintings blended into the décor, they began to dematerialize, leading Heidi Wood to take her practice a step further. During a residency in Los Angeles, she replaced her paintings by virtual images that were incrusted in the city’s billboards.

"Los Angeles, world capital of the entertainment industry, attracts a horde of aspiring actors. In popular belief, luck or a fortuitous encounter can catapult an unknown to global stardom. Countless people live and hustle in the expectation of this miracle, managing their image 24 hours a day. Faced with this hype, my work adopted a posture of aggressive certainty. Manipulated digital images of urban landscapes or portraits were paired with found advertising slogans and sent out to a huge mailing list as spams. Producing merchandise was put on hold in favour of marketing for a product that no longer had any physical existence. Distributing these images in a manner clearly seen as a nuisance undermined their brand image as well as their market value. The exhibition will take this observation as its starting point.”
